Nestled along Spain’s northern coast, Cantabria is a treasure trove of dramatic landscapes and rich history, with a rugged coastline, expansive beaches, as well as the iconic Picos de Europa mountain range that offers breathtaking vistas and challenging trails. The capital, Santander, complements the region’s natural wonders with a cosmopolitan atmosphere, bustling city life, cultural attractions, and culinary delights. Cantabria is a captivating destination that provides a unique blend of outdoor adventure and cultural exploration in northern Spain.
The coast of Cantabria offers remarkable spots like Santoña and Laredo, ideal for weekend getaways. Laredo’s expansive beach, Playa La Salvé, stretches over 4 kilometers, making it the longest in Cantabria, perfect for leisurely walks along the shore. Santoña, a quintessential seafaring town, presents a delightful culinary scene with classics like Bar Revellón and El Faro, where seafood, especially local specialties like albóndigas de verdel (mackerel meatballs) and Tudanca beef cuts, are must-try dishes.
Somo is widely recognized as the cradle of surfing in the region, offering consistent waves throughout the year that attract surfers from all corners of the globe. The village has a rich surfing heritage, evidenced by the presence of numerous surf schools, including the pioneering Escuela Cántabra de Surf, the first of its kind in Spain, founded in 1991 by local champion surfer David ‘Capi’ García. These schools cater to all levels of surfers, from beginners to advanced, enhancing the local surf culture and community.
Apart from surfing, Somo and its surrounding areas like Pedreña and Suesa also boast a vibrant gastronomic scene. The region is renowned for its traditional dishes, especially seafood, with local favourites including anchovies and various bounties from the sea. For those seeking a gourmet experience, the area is home to the acclaimed El Cenador de Amós in Villaverde de Pontones and Pan de Cuco in Suesa, a rapidly established favorite despite its recent opening.
