As you’ll discover in this article and others in the magazine, there are a range of activities we can organise for you to explore the different sides of Norway. Sports, hiking, museums and more – you’ll be spoilt for choice.
From Randonnée skiing in the Norwegian Alps to winter surfing on its dramatic coast, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to make the most of the country’s great outdoors. And when you’re ready for a change of pace, tap into our network of experts for a private tour of Norway’s brand-new National Museum, which recently opened in 2022.
Randonée Skiing
Randonnée skiing, otherwise known as back-country skiing or Alpine Touring, is an intrepid form of the popular winter sport. It’s essentially free skiing in the countryside, outside of designated pistes. This freedom can be both challenging and exhilarating…
The Lofoten archipelago in north-western Norway is a popular destination for a number of winter sports, including Randonnée. With sky-piercing mountains like the Svolværgeita pinnacle, you’ll have an abundance of slopes to tour. Lofoten in particular has a well-developed tourism scene which means that while you can embrace the wild while skiing during the day, at night you can soothe away aching muscles in luxury accommodation.
Another location, the Lyngen Alps, at the very north of the country and within the Arctic Circle, will give you great variety in terrain – from couloirs to wide open faces, to tree coverage and more. And the views you discover will be picture perfect.
There are a multitude of great locations for Randonnée in Norway and we would be pleased to direct you to the location that best suits your preferences.
Winter Surfing in Lofoten
Another popular winter sport in Norway is winter surfing, and one of the most favoured places for this is Lofoten. While equally popular in the summer, it’s in the winter when surfers are drawn by its icy beauty.
If you’ve been keeping on top of wellness trends recently then you’ll know that there’s a lot of anecdotal evidence for the endorphin rush surfers and swimmers get from icy waters! You’ll experience plenty of that surfing at Lofoten. Winter surfers rave about the icy quilt of the Norwegian waters in winter and the juxtaposition of rolling waves near snow-covered mountains.
You can surf at famous Unstad beach, a popular point break spot in Norway that’s drawn international crowds for years, or venture further to multiple spots along the archipelago. In nearly every spot here you’ll catch immense waves.
Private Tour of Norwegian National Museum
And once you’re ready for some indoor fun, head over to the National Museum of Norway in Oslo. The new National Museum opened on 11 June 2022. It brings together a multitude of collections from various other national galleries and museums and showcases Norway’s largest collection of art, design and architecture, spanning a range of time from antiquity to the modern day.
The building itself is an architectural point of interest with an illuminated exhibition hall at the highest level, which will be used for temporary exhibitions. And of course, there are multiple cafes and a rooftop bar to enjoy too, for a good coffee or something stronger!
Exhibitions showing this year include a retrospective for Norwegian artist Thorvald Hellesan, a pioneer of cubism; a showcase for Carroll Dunham’s famous prints, and an exhibition titled ‘Imaginary Conversations’ with Louise Bourgeois, the French-American artist.
