Innovation in transportation is all around us. Every month we see new projects designed to make transport more efficient, safer and greener, and provide experiences we’ve never had before! With our Business Innovation Travel programs, you can meet face-to-face with a whole range of innovators and founders of such game-changing projects.
Key Trends
Some of the key innovation trends we’re seeing in transport these days include everything from the minutiae of how to make our roads safer, to the big-hitters of flying taxis and space travel.
Electric vehicles are seeing ongoing developments in battery-charging speeds and vehicle range. Investment in driverless car technology is also hotting up, with ride-hailing services bringing driverless cars to the roads already.

So what are some examples of these exciting projects?
Sample Innovations
- In the field of electric vehicles, Zurich company ABB has developed an electric battery that can fully charge in 15 minutes for a range of 400-600km.
- As for self-driving cars, Tesla – based in Austin, Texas – has developed Dojo, a supercomputer, to be used for AI and machine learning algorithms to better ‘train’ its self-driving cars.
- In San Francisco, California, start-up Cruise has officially introduced self-driving taxis to its fleet of taxis.
- Many airlines are entering into collaborations with flying taxi developers. In the UK, Virgin Atlantic and Vertical Aerospace are collaborating to launch a network of air taxis to service various cities.
- Preferring to do things in-house, in Toulouse, France, Airbus has also been investing heavily in the development of air taxis, including its recent CityAirbus NextGen model – for which it is building a test center in Germany.
- Urban design and road safety meet in a trial of the ‘Internet of Roads’ that is taking place in Turin, Italy. High-speed internet networks are being used to connect data from cars and pedestrians to determine hazards in near real-time.
- Also in Hamburg, Germany, 200 thermal imaging cameras have been installed to capture real-time traffic data to help manage traffic flow and risk.
- In Italy, company Floating Motors are turning heads by modifying vintage classic cars into electric speedboats!
Sample Destinations
Germany
Germany is proving to be another hub for innovation in transport, through start-ups and established companies alike. In Hamburg, thermal imaging cameras are being used to address traffic flow and risk. In Berlin, the first test flight of a zero-emission flying taxi was completed in May 2022 by VoloCopter. Also Berlin-based architectural firm Lava is creating 10 space-inspired villages around the world, each including a large space center!
